Things To Consider Before Buying A Dishwasher

September 23, 2008

If you are in the market to buy a dishwasher then you have a wide variety of models to choose from. You can spend as little as $300 and as much as $3000 or more on getting a new dish washer. But there are in fact a few aspects to be considered before making the actual purchase.

Capacity:

The first aspect that should come to your mind is the capacity of the dishwasher. A small family definitely needs a smaller dishwasher as compared to a larger family. There is absolutely no point in buying a dishwasher which is quite small or too large, as it will only waste your time and water. A standard sized 24” dishwasher can hold fourteen place settings whereas a compact dishwasher of 18” size can hold up to eight place settings. You can choose the one which suits best to your family size. Going for tall tubs, can take care of odd-shaped dishes and also provides you with a greater capacity. Do not make a mistake of choosing cheaper models with a central cone as it significantly reduces the capacity. You can also go for the models, which have adjustable racks or foldable tines.

Noise level:

The next thing you must check about a dishwasher is its noise level. All the models are provided with the noise ratings and these ratings must be checked to make sure that your dishwasher does not turn out to be a noisy nuisance. Noise levels of some quietest dishwashers vary between 42 to 45 dB. But you must beware of some noiseless models, which do not have a built-in garbage disposal. So ample of care is required while considering this factor.

Energy efficiency;

In this world, when almost every country is facing energy crisis, it is better to opt for the dishwasher, which conserves water as well as electricity. Even the manufacturers consider energy saving as there are certain laws related to the matter. You can also make sure to check the logo (an energy star), which ensures that the device will consume 25% lesser energy that those which do not have the logo on them.

Budget:

Another most important factor is the budget. The budget not only narrows down your search but also allows you to weigh your options. Additional cost allows you to get a dishwasher with innumerable features, only to find that you are not using half of them ever. So it is worthless to buy a very expensive and complicated dishwasher. A thorough search can help you in comparing the prices and features of various models. It is wise to buy one, which gives you the full worth of your hard earned money.

Styling and color:

Last but not the least, comes the style and color of the dishwasher. The market is full of different kinds of models. Most of the dishwashers come in either bisque, black, white or stainless steel look. So you can choose the one which blends best with your kitchen color and style.

These above listed factors can help you to make the right decision. Buying a dishwasher can be a tricky situation but if you consider the top three aspects seriously then it is very easy to find the one, which suits you the best. Though, be prepared to make a few compromises if budget is a limiting factor.

The History Of British Pennies

September 19, 2008

The purchasing power of a British Penny may have declined significantly during all these years, but even today the coin sits proudly among the treasures of, almost all coin collectors.

“Penny” is the term used for the lowest value coin in America. But originally, Pennies were very popular among British American colonists. The British Pennies in fact have descended from the coins of Roman times (denarius). The similarity is too prominent to be missed; a Roman pound equals to 240 denarii, whereas a British pound equals to 240 pence.

The British used the abbreviation‘d’ for writing pence. For example if they were to write 5 pence then they would use ‘5d’ instead. The German word ‘pfenning’, as well as the British ‘penny’, both seems to be derived from the same word ‘pennige’, used in Old English.

In 211 BC, when the first Roman denarius came into existence, it was made of silver and weighed somewhere around 4.5 grams. Later King Offa of Merica introduced the British Penny (a thin silver coin), in the beginning of eighth century. It was in fact the in Britain, which was minted for 500 years. The appearance of these coins varied significantly as around 54 mints were involved in the production of British Pennies. With the passage of time even the silver content suffered a variation due to some greedy moneyers (persons involved in the production of coins).

The quality of the penny improved in 1124, the reign of Henry I due to the reduction in the number of mints. Though the purchasing power declined significantly with time, still the production of these coins continued.

Pennies have undergone through many changes from their appearance to their composition, but the fact does not affect the collectors and the hobbyist to include it proudly among their collections.

Shopping For Baby And Toddler Clothes And Toys

September 19, 2008

Shopping for baby and toddler clothes and toys may appear to be one of the easiest tasks; but in reality it can be a real trying situation. The markets provide you with such huge variety of clothes and toys that the more you see, the more confused you feel.

Whether toys or clothes; you must search for the softest materials available in the market. The soft, sensitive skin of the baby and toddler should feel comfortable when coming in contact with the either.

There are varieties of clothes available in the market. But cotton is a fabric, which is always right for your baby in all kind of seasons. It can be enough airy during peak summers and can be warm and snug during very cold winters. Toddler often sweats with the addition of new every day activities, but with cotton there is absolutely no need to worry.

As far as colors are concerned it entirely depends on your own choice. But do not go for too much ribbons or laces as they cause the risk of suffocation in baby and toddler. You can also consider your toddler’s preferences while shopping for him.

Now when it comes to the shopping of toys for baby and toddler, the most important thing is to see that it should not contain carcinogens, which can harm toddlers if accidentally swallowed. Actually babies have a habit of putting everything in their mouth and hence you must not choose toys, which have small parts with a threat of choking hazard.

Bright colored toys always attract the attention of baby and toddler. There are innumerable baby soothers and rattlers available in the market. Some can be real comfort for the agitated gums of the baby during teething period. The baby can find them real soothing when these toys are cooled in the refrigerator for sometime. You can also shop for some bath toys. These bath toys serve with dual purpose; they not only add fun to bathing but also distract the toddler, when he has to be soaped.

Since you can not buy everything present in the market, it is better to analyze your baby and toddler, his interests and his preferences. Do not accumulate too much as different ages require different kinds of toys and clothes. It is wise to provide your baby with the most appropriate clothing and toys according to his growth development and age. The best part is to make him participate whenever you are buying things for him.

Let it be toys or clothes or furniture; you need to buy whatever suits your child the best. Give him a lively and colorful atmosphere by decorating his room with the best you can afford. The clothes a child wears and the toys with which he plays are definitely an important part of his growing up. So next time when you start shopping include you baby and toddler while making the final decision.

“Plz don’t kill me” says, the female fetus

June 24, 2008

Unfortunately, ours has always been a male dominated society. Since ages man has been proud to treat women more as a mere slave than as an equal partner. Though, known by many beautiful names such as better half, fair sex, and devis; women have been abused physically, morally, sexually, economically and politically too.

But the most disturbing dimension that has been added now to the heartless cruelty against women is to kill a female child even before her birth. Science progressed and gave us a device called “ultrasound”, to detect ailments and abnormalities inside human body. Ironically, man is using this device to detect the sex of the child even before it is born. Imagine a mother who agrees to have the fetus exterminated, if it happens to be a female. How cruel???????

I was rather surprised to see the statistics, which show an increase in the number of parents, who willingly present themselves for aborting the female fetus. How can a mother become so hard hearted as to kill her own daughter even before she is born?

The entire society, some foolish religious beliefs and our wretched customs; all are to be blamed for this heartless act.

If you talk to the couples, who willingly exterminate their unborn daughter, the reasons provided by them sound too hollow and fake. Such parents present you with a long list of troubles which they feel starts with the birth of the girl child. They feel that these days it is very difficult to maintain the security of the girl child. It is even more difficult to find a good match for her. And the hardest part they feel is arranging for the dowry and still the demands and agonies never die even after her marriage. All these theories and opinions give the parents a shiver at the birth of a female child. They find it much easier to kill her in the womb rather than to suffer for the rest of their lives.

But can such an immoral action be justified by these hollow reasons??

Human race can never continue if this shameful act of female feticide continues for long. Even today the male-female ratio in India is adversely tilted against women. How long can men survive without the other half??

The only mantra to save society from this doom is focused education. The parents need to be educated in order to generate public opinion against female feticide. The rules and regulations made by the government will never work unless we come out of our prejudices and develop a rational attitude.

Discipline- A necessity to revive India

June 20, 2008

“Discipline” refers to a proper training and control of mind and character. It is a necessity to conduct life in accordance with rules and regulations. It can not be obtained without voluntary obedience to some fixed codes of behavior. Discipline may put some checks on your freedom, but a person free to do his will, can create havoc in the world. It is in fact impossible to lead a civilized life, without the check of discipline.

Discipline contributes towards “work and progress” and both the terms will sound meaningless in it’s absence. People usually make the mistake of associating discipline with cut down of freedom whereas discipline is undoubtedly the foundation of all freedom. The charm and value of freedom can not be realized without the discipline.

The deteriorating standards of discipline in our daily lives have already started showing colors. It has given birth to such an immense amount of violence, criminal acts, inefficiencies and corruption. You hardly find anyone taking his or her work seriously. Whatsoever be the field, indiscipline has eaten the roots of honesty; moral values and above all social and national life. Schools and colleges, which were once known as temples of learning have converted into hot beds of indiscipline.

These days, indiscipline has completely defiled the atmosphere. Is this the atmosphere in which we want our children to grow and flourish??? There is a dire necessity to take steps and realize our responsibilities. We can at least do our share of the duty with genuine sincerity by making our life more disciplined. Basically, it has to come from within and once the importance of discipline is realized, the existing world will become more organized and peaceful. So, be a contributing hand to make India a better place to live.

Back pain at a glance

June 20, 2008

Back pain is the price a man pays for walking on two legs. In quadrupeds, the weight is evenly distributed on the four limbs and the spine just acts as a beam between the shoulder and the pelvic girdle whereas in bipeds the entire weight of the body is on the lower limbs and is borne by the spine itself.

Spine is not a rigid structure but composed of vertebrae with intervertebral discs, which act as cushions between the vertebrae. These discs are further surrounded by muscles and ligaments, which ensure that undue pressure is not exerted on them.

Pre-Disposing Factors to Back Pain

  1. Incorrect posture: Maintaining an incorrect posture is one of the most common factors leading to back pain. Being in the same position for long hours; incorrect posture while lying down, sleeping and sitting; getting up with a jerk and over-stretching of muscles, all contribute to back pain.
  2. Obesity: An incorrect weight causes extra strain and pressure in the spine, which results in backache.
  3. Sedentary lifestyle: Our life styles are often a potential factor leading to backache. There is absolutely no time for the maintenance of body in our lives.
  4. Lack of exercise: Muscles require a proper toning to keep the body flexible and strong. Inactivity and lack of exercise results in a weak body frame, which is more prone to back pain.
  5. Stress; physical and mental: Physical and mental stress plays a very important role in aggravating back pain. These days we find so much of stress at home and work place that it becomes difficult to cope up.
  6. Unhealthy food habits: Lack of nutrition is a common problem among young people due to their tilt towards junk and fast food. Hence, 5% of young population suffers from back pain.
  7. Lack of sleep: uncomfortable bed and late night lifestyle can also result in back pain.
  8. Post menopausal and age related Osteoporosis: As we get old, our bones become weaker and the risk of getting a back pain increases significantly.
  9. Pregnancy and childbirth: As the fetus grows in weight, it exerts a pressure on the spine, causing back pain. Back pain is a common symptom in women, who undergo a C-section.

Causes of Back Pain

      Tuberculosis, trauma, tumor and television!!!!!!

·        Tuberculosis: An old age adage in India is “when in doubt think T.B.”. Tuberculosis of spine is very common even in the affluent class, as back pain is often ignored.

·        Trauma: Despite of the precautions like seat belts, air bags and helmets; people become a trauma victim. An array of spine injuries is very common in accidents which can lead to a life long backache.

·        Tumor: Spine is the commonest site for metastasis deposits of various malignant tumors and back pain is often the presenting symptom of people suffering from cancer.

·        Television: We all can smile, once we think how we become crouch potatoes as we come home and keep surfing channels with total disregard to the spine

“Prevention is better than cure” has been drilled into us since we were children. THERE IS NO CURE FOR BACK PAIN, however pessimistic it might sound. But the severity of the back pain can be reduced by:

·        Maintaining a correct posture

·        Maintaining a correct body weight

·        Including exercise routine in your daily life

·        Reducing physical and mental stress by the means of yoga, meditation and morning walks.

·        Taking a nutritional diet

·        Taking proper sleep

·        Ensuring proper care and maintenance of the body during menopause, pregnancy and old age.

Formula 1 in India

June 20, 2008

Recently, India has been quite eager to stage a Formula One race. The Indian Olympic Association was pleased to receive a letter from the administration of F1 permitting them to bring the race in 2010. But it was not easy for India as the Indian administration was asked to meet several difficult standards which mainly included the financial strategy. Though, the deadline to meet these conditions has been extended, said Mr. Suresh Kalmadi, the president of Indian Olympic Association.

The preparations to host the first Formula One Grand Prix have already been begun. The management has approved of two sites, both situated at the outskirts of Delhi, but the final choice is in the hands of the IOA, being the race promoters. One of the sites is near to the industrial area of Gurgaon and the other is in Greater Noida. The contract for the building of track has not yet been given to any business group and the IOA has invited the Delhi government to intervene in the decision.

Today, India is rated as a rising hi-tech country. The progress of India has been on a considerable elevation by the addition of several vehicle manufacturers. The country has got potential reasons for having Formula One racing, as Formula One is a technology driven sport. The commercial viability of the racing track has to be increased by adding up various industrial parks, special economic zones, etc to it.

An investment of round about Rs350-500 crores is required to set up the whole infrastructure. But the amount is worth investing, as India will become one of those privileged countries who can boast of having Formula One circuits. The best part of having formula one in India is its annual conduct unlike World Cup and Olympics which take place only once in four years.

The viewership of Formula One was found to exceed majority of sports in the world. The media was surprised to have a huge viewership of around 70 million when Formula One was broadcasted live on Doordarshan. It further rose to 91.3 million when Mr. Ecclestone, Formula One boss, was interviewed live from the race track at Silverstone. The craze of Formula One among the Indians just shows itself.

Narain Karthikevan and Karun Chandok have sparkled and shined for India and have also increased the pride of having Formula One in India. India is sure to overcome all the hurdles which may come in establishing the Formula One racing track. So let us keep our fingers crossed and wait for the BIG event……

Wake to forge an India sans corruption

June 20, 2008

These days world has turned materialistic, where money has become the be-all and end-all of every individual. Our craving for more and more money does not come to an end. The endless desires of life increase the insatiable lust for the money. Man does not mind getting rich even by foul means.

This lust has given birth to corruption in public life. Things have become so stringent that feeling of compunction has totally vanished among common people. Corruption has in fact become a way of life and is often taken for granted by a vast majority. Corruption well proves the adage “money makes the mare go”.

Isn’t it a matter to laugh that a person apprehended of taking bribes, can go scot-free by giving bribes? Such is the elevation in corruption that the society is moving towards total collapse. There are multiple ways in which corruption flourishes in our country. Within a short span of time, it has risen to a high political level. It has basically taken the form of trade. Hoarding, black-marketing and adulterating things, all are various colors of corruption. Human life is often played with in order to earn huge profits. The saddest part of the whole scenario is that it takes place right under the nose of our efficient official machinery. Higher officials connive with these people and share the booty. What a shame indeed!!!!!!!!!!

There is absolutely no field of life that has remained untouched by this evil of corruption. Trade, industry, commerce, administration, police, courts and the list goes on and on. You just name any department and one thing you are going to find for sure is CORRUPTION.

Where are we Indians leading ourselves to? Modern materialistic values have overwhelmed us to such a degree that we have become oblivious to our old ethics and the faith we had in them. Leave alone the moral values we have even lost faith in ourselves!!!!!!!!

The situation has become really alarming and a mass movement is required to cleanse and alter the infrastructure of our society. We all should wake up to realize that there is a dire need to free our country from poverty, exploitation and corruption.
